January - March 2020 Reading

This poor blog has been neglected for a while. But with all the extra time I have now I've been working on getting new posts up. I figured I'd go ahead and do a quick review of all the books I've read so far this year. Then I can just update monthly after that. You might want to grab a drink because this is a review of 17 books.

ONE DAY IN DECEMBER
I heard about this book from someone on Instagram that I follow. She described it as like reading a holiday Hallmark movie. I immediately went to Amazon and purchased it to read during the holidays. But then I lost it and didn't find it again until January. But really, I love Christmas so I can read or watch a holiday themed story anytime. This book however I think I only made it to the second chapter before I put it in the discard pile. I was shocked that it already had used as much language as a rated R movie.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER
Sometime in 2019 I had decided I wanted to learn more about intercessory prayer. I'd asked for some book recommendations on facebook and this one was recommended several times. There were some chapters that I really enjoyed and others I just breezed through looking for the highlights. At the time when I read it, I remember several getting several new thoughts on prayer from this book...but now I can't recall a single one.

THE MIRACLE MORNING
I am definitely not a morning person. So I am always reading blog posts about becoming better at getting up ready to make the most of my day. I ran across this book and it had great reviews. But it did not motivate me in the least. Though honestly...I'm not sure any book truly could motivate me in that area.

THE 3-DAY EFFECT
This sounded so promising from a scientific point of view. How does nature change our minds? I know that God created our world for us to enjoy. And I truly think that sitting by the ocean, driving through the mountains or strolling through a garden can have create a mental change in us that can in turn create a physical change. In this book the author goes on excursions with groups for several days and interviews them to document the changes they feel. I think it is a good starting place I just wish that it had been a bit deeper, less language and more God focused.

MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY
A great Christian historical fiction. Light but the story still had depth. A baker who must try and find a husband in order to save her business. Plenty of drama along the way to pull you in wondering how it will end. I quite enjoyed.

THE BILLIONAIRE'S ALTERNATE MARRIAGE
Contemporary Christian fiction. This was either a free read of $0.99 is how I actually ended up with it. I did not have high hopes for this book at all. But it ended up being a cute read.  Twin sisters in love with the same guy, yet only one admits to being in love. Years later they find themselves living across the street from him only now he owns a tech company and is quite wealthy. A quick marriage to help a child produces lots of questions as to how everyone will proceed. This is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone book.

SKYWARD
YA dystopian fiction. Spensa, a young girl, who's father was a pilot wants to be just like him when she grows up. The only problem was her father was a disgraced coward by all accounts and everyone thinks Spensa will do the same if given the chance. Can she even make it into flight school with her family's history still on everyone's mind? This was a cute read. It's book #1 in the series. I enjoyed listening to it but I'm not eager to proceed to the next book.

THE SHIFTING FOG
Historical fiction. Kate Morton has become one of my favorite authors. I love how she weaves a story together. Though at times I almost get lost as to who is speaking or what year the character is in. But in the end it creates such layers that make the story feel full. This story surrounds one eventful evening and the death that occurred. How everyone gets there and the consequences of that night form the layered story. Plenty of "upstairs/downstairs" stories along the way.

223 ORCHARD STREET
Christian historical fiction. Katie crossed the Atlantic to New York City make a new life for herself and eventually for her little sister. But when her sister Shannon arrives Katie faces new troubles to get her sister home. In steps the young doctor who once offered Katie hope. Will this new meeting intertwine their lives together forever or just long enough to save her sister? One of my favorite reads so far this year.

THE 30-DAY MONEY CLEANSE
I listened to this as an audiobook. It might be better for me to read it and work through it. I ended up getting lost and finding it boring.

THE KISS OF DECEPTION
YA dystopian fiction.  Princess Lia chooses to defy her family and runs from the marriage that was being forced upon her. As she hides out in a small town working as a tavern waitress she encounters two young men, one the prince she fled from and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Which one is she falling in love with? Amidst all of this there are also secret languages and the mystery as to whether she has "the gift of sight" like her family claims. Book #1 in series
THE HEART OF BETRAYAL
Book #2 in series. Now we know who is the assassin and who is the prince. But is it all for naught now that Lia has been kidnapped and taken to her enemy's kingdom? How will she escape? Is her gift growing stronger or is she only playing it up to cause fear?
I really enjoyed both of these books. In fact I'm currently waitlisted for book #3 from my library.

STELLA BAIN
Historical fiction. This was so promising. An amnesiac nurse during WWI. What secrets does she hold? Will the doctor and his wife be able to help her remember? In the end her story and how quickly it unfolds just left me bored.

SAFE HAVEN
Fiction. I've never read any Nicholas Sparks books, but I think I've seen all or nearly all of the movies made from his books. Safe Haven is one of the movies that I really enjoyed. So I thought for sure I'd just love the book...because books are always better. In this case...no. Honestly I thought the movie was much better. I hate even admitting that but it was true for me. I will say, I think the movie followed the book very well. But I guess seeing the characters come to life in the movie added more than the book could offer.

ABIGAIL
Christian historical fiction. This book started out good. A minister ends up in a town that is lost and without hope. He wants to restore the church building thus helping to restore the lives of those in the town but he needs help. He recalls a church secretary, Abigail, who is now a widow and asks her to come and join him. Once there she of course encounters the handsome Chad who quickly becomes her thorn. Here's where it took a sharp turn for me...they get caught up in a tornado that takes them back in time to the days of King David. Ummm...that's a hard no for me. I kept reading hoping it was just a dream she had while being knocked out, but no. At that point I lost all interest in the book, though I did finish it.

THE BOOKWOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK
Historical fiction. Loved this. Gave me some of the feels of the book Christy by Catherine Marshall. Set in the mountains of Kentucky, a young girl with blue-tinged skin works as a librarian delivering books all through the mountains. No one knows what causes her skin to be blue except it's a family trait and people see her as being worth less than others. Very interesting story and especially as the part about the blue-tinged skin was based on actual facts.

THE BEAUTIFUL
YA historical fantasy. I think that the reader of the audiobook drew me in more than the actual story. The way she read some of the parts was very alluring. Young Celine has recently moved to New Orleans. She has secrets she is trying to hide. Living with other girls in a convent she chances upon a young woman in need of a seamstress. Celine offers her services and encounters a world of darkness including the charming and wealthy Sebastian and detective Michael.

April 2018 Reading

I have been reading a lot more lately. Eight books to be exact for April. I think the main reason why is I got my mom's old ipad and between the kindle app and my library app I have tons more to read. Hopefully by the end of May I'll be halfway to my reading goal for the year.

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US

I did see that this had been made into a movie before I ever started reading it. Or rather, this one I listened to on Audible. At first I didn't think I was going to care for it, mostly because I didn't care for the voice of the reader. But then once the story got going I really enjoyed it. Set in the present day it's the story of a perilous journey that two strangers find themselves on together. After their plane crashes they must push through the rugged snow filled mountains if they are going to survive. The book does have a plot twist and unfortunately I had guessed it pretty quickly so that was a bit of a let down. Overall though I quite enjoyed this one. I did watch the movie within a week of reading the book and basically felt Hollywood ruined it.

A CURIOUS BEGINNING

This was a fun read. It felt like a YoungAdult genre only a bit grown up. Plenty of twists along the way with a bit of romance. A period piece with kidnapping, the circus and a royal twist. I'd like to ready more of this series and more from the author.

COUNTED WITH THE STARS

When reading the Bible, do you ever wonder what it would of been like to have been alive during that day? This is the story of an Egyptian slave who is befriended by a Jewish slave and their story of the plagues that Egypt endured before the Israelites were set free to go through the desert to the Promised Land. I really enjoyed this book. The writings of the author make that section of the Bible more alive to me now. I want to read the rest of the series.

BRIDE FOR KENDALL

Such a short, but cute read. JoAnn is chosen to travel far from the city she has known to be a wife for Kendall, a Canadian Mountie. With so many difference and no time for courting before their marriage, can they find love and make their marriage last? I have a few more of these books as their are a ton in the series.

FOR LOVE AND HONOR

Imagine living in a time where a birthmark could be taken as a sign of being a witch?! Lady Sabine lives with that danger daily. Will the Knight her grandmother is eyeing for her look beyond that and see the smart, God-fearing woman that she is? This was another quick read that I enjoyed. I saw after I read it that it is listed as book 3 in a series but it read fine as a stand-alone.

THE KREMLIN CONSPIRACY

Imagine a Christian version of a Jack Ryan story and you would have this book. It was a bit of a slow burn for me but by the end I quite enjoyed it. It did feel a bit long, but the author really sets up all the characters for you. Plenty of action, though I might enjoy this genre more in a movie setting.

STALKING JACK THE RIPPER

Young Adult historical fiction. Audrey Rose is just a teenager but she works with her uncle doing autopsies and sneaks into his classes disguised as a boy. There she meets Thomas who she finds is annoyingly charming. Together they work to solve the Jack the Ripper crimes and everyone is a suspect. This series is another I'd like to keep reading someday.

FRANKENSTEIN

I'm still working my way through some classics this year. I read the abridged version of this as a child. This is another book I listened through using Audible. Some books for me are better read than listened to and I think that classics are those kinds of books. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would and just kind of got lost in the reading of it.

Goodmorning and happy Wednesday! Today I have some book reviews to share with you. Unfortunately March was a bit of a dud for me in terms of books. I didn't read many and the ones that I read were not great. Good news though...I'm in the middle of a couple really good ones (so far) so I'll have some better ones to share with you next month :-)

The Handmaid's Tale

This was a book that has had tons of buzz around it lately and even a tv series. So I didn't really read anything about it and just downloaded it from audible. I really need to stop doing that. If I'd read the synopsis and reviews I'd of realized it wasn't a book for me. It's a dystopian story of the fall of the US government by extreme right wing Christians. Those extremists then use the story of Rachel and Leah in the Bible and how they used their handmaids to conceive children with their husbands to try and do the same today. I'm not sure how far I got into it...several chapters. But then due to the language and content I stopped listening.

Shades of Milk and Honey

I'm still a bit confused on this book. It's weird, but I think it would be a lot more interesting as a movie instead of a book. It's a historical fiction that tries to give you the feeling of a Jane Austen novel but fails. Many people in this book use some sort of magic to create scenes that people can see and feel they are actually part of. I just couldn't really get into that part of the book. The main storyline just fell short for me too. I don't remember any language or adult content in it...so in line with a PG movie.

Just Like Heaven

Have you ever read a book that sucked you in and then you ended up hating the ending? Yep, that's how this book was for me. It's another Historical fiction romance that started off so cute. The main characters are charming and the storyline was fun and lighthearted. Then nearly at the end those characters disappointed me. Adult content and a little language. In line with a PG-13 movie.

February 2018 Reading

At first I wasn't sure I'd have anything to share with you that I'd read this past month. But then I finished a few right in a row and I have 5 books to share with you. Thankfully none of them were duds like in January.

The Dead Shall Not Rest - Dr. Thomas Silkstone series #2

I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was looking forward to reading this next one. It's a bit like CSI in the 1700's. This story felt darker than the previous. There was plenty of bringing the previous characters back into this story that it felt familiar. And the new characters developed quite well into this plot. Not much to keep me guessing but still a nice little thriller. 

In line with a PG-13 movie rating.

Secrets of Sloan House - Chicago World's Fair Mystery series #1

This is a Christian based mystery. The ones that I've read before never really lured me in. But then again I usually stick to Christian romance and not mysteries. The beginning was a bit slow for me but about half way in it lured me in. In fact I read the final half in one night while in bed in a couple hours. The ending did surprise me a bit and I want to read more in this series.

In line with a PG movie rating.

Wait and See: Finding Peace in God's Pauses and Plans

I feel like I've been in a few waiting seasons the past several years. So when I saw this book mentioned by a fellow blogger I rushed to order it, thankfully with Amazon Prime! The first day I tore into it hoping it would help me with learning to wait in a better way. I really wanted to like this book. And it is a good book...but just wasn't the right fit for me. The biggest issue I had with it is the chapters felt way too long for a "self-help" book. I prefer snippets and it's just part of me that I can't leave a chapter unfinished. So I ended up rushing through the end of the chapters just to finish. In the end it just didn't speak much to me and felt a bit redundant with each chapter.

31 Prayers For My Future Husband

No...I'm not engaged. Not even dating. But this was still a good book. I believe that God knows who I will marry and it's never too early to start praying over his life. Honestly I'd had this book for a while. I was super hesitant about this book at first because I don't read prayers to God.  I pour out my prayers straight to Him from me. But...this had so many great things to pray over that I'd never have thought of without being in a relationship. I'd definitely recommend it whether you are single and wanting to pray for a spouse or dating/engaged.

The Garden of Letters

In January I read The Lost Wife and loved it. This book is by the same author. And her beautiful writing style is the same. I can't quite explain it but the way her words flow just draws me in. And her storylines are just filled with some of the things I love. This one was also set during the Holocaust but in Italy right before, and as, Hitler's troops invade. It mixes in love stories and hidden codes written into music.

The Autobiography of George Mueller

I want to try and add in more biographies into my reading. This one was sooo good if you are looking for a faith building book. His life was definitely inspiring. Time after time God moved and answered his prayers when things were at what looked like their lowest point. Just a reminder that God sees us and hears our prayers.

Flowers From The Storm

I don't read a lot of romance novels, unless they are Christian romance...and this one wasn't. But as far as this style of book goes it wasn't too bad. The story line was somewhat intriguing for a while. But then I lost interest for weeks. The idea of a quaker falling in love with a Duke who has perhaps lost his mind...well, it had potential. But in the end I finished it by speed reading just to finish it.

Private

This book I didn't even finish. In fact I'm not sure I made it past the first couple chapters. There was nothing that I found appealing about the storyline. And then there was the language and sexuality that stopped me from even going any further. I've never ready any of James Patterson's books but if this is any indication I don't think I ever will.

The Lost Wife

So so so so good. I find the holocaust intriguing in such a sorrowful way. It boggles my mind that it could of ever occurred. This book takes place during that time and tells of a love story and the lives of that man and woman, each from their point of view. Best fiction pieces I've read in ages. I'm hoping the author's other books are just as good.

A Quiet Life In The Country

Such a fun little mystery novel. Reminds me a bit of Miss Marple or Massie Dobbs...only more simplified. An easy read/listen. Fun characters. I'm going to read some more in this series.

White Fang

Another classic to check off my list. I hate to even say this...but I loved the movie with Ethan Hawke soooo much more than the book. And it goes against me so much to admit that because the books are almost ALWAYS better. The beginning of this book was great but then it fell away for me after that.

Blog, Inc.; Blogging For Passion, Profilt and to Create Community

It took me quite a while to read this book. In fact I bought it two years ago. Since this book is packed full of information I didn't want to just fly through it. There were lots and lots of great things I picked up in this book and it has lots of highlighting throughout it now. But I almost feel like I waited too late to read it. The blogging community seems so much harder to break into now that everyone loves the immediate gratification of instagram.

Over The Edge

This book is part of a series, but I hadn't read any other of the books. It was an easy read with no vulgarity. This story follows the lives of Seth and Callie Kincaid along with Seth's family. Callie heads west looking for her husband, Seth, who disappeared not long after they were married. Seth, who's endured several injuries, is shocked to find out he's married and is missing a large chunk of his memory. Not only do they face the challenges of trying to make a marriage but drama of all kinds follows them.

I can't give you a review of this book other than to say I don't think I made it through the first chapter before the profanity caused me to turn off this audio book. It wasn't for me.

The Banishment
by: Marion Chesney

There was something about this book that reminded me of a very simplified Pride and Prejudice meets Sense and Sensibility. Another easy and fun read. Isabella, the eldest of six sisters, has to leave her beloved home that her father gambled away. Her family is depending on her to catch the eye of the bachelor that bought their property. But slowly things are also blossoming between her and an elder Lord.

The Solitary Envoy
by: T. Davis Bunn, Isabella Bunn

Years ago I vaguely remember reading the Songs of Acadia series. This book is a continuation but is the Heirs of Acadia series. Erica Langston loves to help her father with his business. But with the British invasion tragedy strikes her family. She soon finds she must travel over to England to try and collect the family's money being held by the British banks. Upon arrival she has to face her worst enemy, but the more she comes into contact with him the more her barricades are broken down.

February 2016 Book Report

Murder In The Afternoon
by: Frances Brody

This is a murder mystery that is part of the Kate Shackleton series. I believe this is book #3, but it's the first book I've read in the series and I was able to stay in the story and didn't feel as though I was missing out by not having read the others in the series. I really liked this book. It reminded me very much of Miss Marple, only a younger version who's not quite as quick witted. I'd love to read the other books in this series.

Cavendon Hall
by: Barbara Taylor Bradford

If you like Downton-esque stories then this one is for you. It has the same uprstairs/downstairs story lines with drama and love triangles. I loved how this story started out and threw you right into drama. But then it seemed to clear it up fairly easily and the rest of the book I was waiting for more peaks of drama that just fell short for me. I believe there are now more books in this series but I think I'll pass on those.

Cape Refuge
by: Terri Blackstock

So this was the first book in a very long time that I didn't finish. It was an audio book and I found the reader's southern accents too exaggerated for me. I think I could of pushed past that but honestly I was probably a quarter of the way in and the story wasn't drawing me in yet. I've never read any of Terri's books, but I'd give them another try.

January 2016 Book Report

Last year I set what seemed like an attainable goal, to read 50 books in a year. And I failed. But it was a very busy year for me. This year I've set the same goal for myself and I am more confident that I can achieve it.

So here is a list and review of what I read in January.

One thought I had...would you like to have a review of what content is included that some might find objectionable due to morals? I try to read mostly Christian fiction, but I do also read a lot of other fiction as well. I was thinking something minimal but kind of in the style of PluggedIn does for movies...yes, no or doesn't matter to you?

A Taste For Murder - Hemlock Falls Mysteries
by: Claudia Bishop

The original overview I read for this story described it as two sisters who run the Hemlock Falls Inn and who solve murder mysteries. It sounded intriguing. And while that description is accurate, it ended up being very different that I imagined. The mystery part of the story was pretty good actually, but it was the characters who I just didn't connect with.

How To Study Scripture

by: Jane Johnson

This was a very quick read. I printed the digital version and had lots of passages that I highlighted. While I loved what Jane had to say, I just wish there was a bit more to this book, especially for the price.

The Ashford Affair

by: Lauren Willig

This is the 3rd book I've ready by Lauren Willig. The story follows the lives of two cousins who grew up together in the early 1900s as well as a relative in modern times who learns about the stories of the cousin's lives. This is another book that had potential but ended up being my least favorite book by the author. The biggest plot twist was easy to figure out from the beginning. Beware this is a book that switches between time every chapter or so.

The Inheritance

by: Tamera Alexander

This was my favorite book of the month. It was an easy read with a simple story line but I find those to be favorites to quickly get in. The story is set in the 1800s in Colorado. It follows the story of McKenna Ashford and her brother as they move from Missouri to Colorado to get a fresh start. Unfortunately troubles fall into McKenna's way at almost every turn. From beginning to end it had a good moral base.

january book report

do you like to read? i mean are you one of those people who loves to sink their noses into a book and sit like that for hours...me too!!! in fact sometimes i have to not let myself start a new book if i know that i just won't have the time to read it.

this year though i'm going to try to read 50 books. and the main way i'm going to be reading my books is actually by listening to them. which totally feels like cheating to me! i prefer to hold a book in my hands, feel the paper and smell it. but i just don't have the time. since i'm a graphic designer and sit in front of a computer most of the day i can easily listen to a book while i work. the first few times i tried listening to books i hated it. but slowly i've become a convert.

so each month i figured i would share a little book report of what i read the previous month. you can add me as a friend and see my progress on goodreads. also, please let me know what you are reading and leave me some good suggestions in the comments below.

The Secret Garden // Frances Hodgson Burnett

overview //  this story follows mary lennox as she moves from india to england to live at misselthwaite manor. there she roams the halls of the house and the gardens outside and not only discovers secrets in both but begins to come alive herself.

rating // i'm aware that this is a light read, even a children's book. but i had seen several movie productions of this book yet never read it as a child so i wanted to add it to my read list. i was surprised at just how much i loved this book. i really wish i had read it as a child, but even as an adult it was a nice little story to follow.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot) - Agatha Christie

overview // hercule poirot is one of the great literary 'detectives' for great reasons. in this first book we find him helping his friend, hastings, trying to solve the mystery of who killed the lady of the house where hastings was a guest. there of course are lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

rating // i had a feeling i'd love this mystery and i did! i've seen a lot of the poirot mysteries on dvd and of course the books are equally as awesome. i love a good mystery to keep my mind working!

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sherlock Holmes) - Arthur Conan Doyle

overview // holmes and watson are once again on the hunt to solve the case of a massive hound who has been terrorizing the moors. with one man already dead they are on a race to catch this thing before another life is taken.

rating // once again, i'm loving a good mystery. i really want to work my way through all of the sherlock holmes series.

Belonging - Robin Lee Hatcher

overview // felicia kristofferson is looking for a new start, one that involves working as the new school teacher of a small idaho town. colin murphy just wants to care for his daughter, charity and run his general store. as their paths continue to cross in this small town with gossipers and those who want this new teacher kicked out, will their friendship blossom into something more?

rating // i've read a dozen stories like this. they are a nice little read, with christian values throughout. my problem is they are all so similar and you can guess most of the ending within the first few chapters. i wish it had more twists and turns in it.

overview // our world has been turned upside down by an alien invasion. at first glance all seems right, but there's something different about everyone. almost all humans have now been implanted by a "soul" who takes over the minds of the humans they now live in. only this one, melanie stryder, isnt' giving up without a fight. and the "soul" living in her, wanderer, begins to wonder if maybe it's okay for melanie to stay

rating //  i'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but there was something about this book that just kept me coming back to it and wondering about the characters even when i wasn't listening to it. i do wish it had followed a bit more of melanie, as it's from the view of wanderer.
